I had the opportunity to complete NVQ3 Advice and Guidance via Bay Training in 2006 so, when I had the chance to undertake another work based qualification, I had no hesitation in phoning Jo and Richard to see if it was possible for me to work towards level 4. I was a bit anxious about completing the qualification at first as it had been a while since I had studied and was very keen to get the qualification completed as quickly as possible. Previously I had had a very bad experience completing my NVQ Level 3 in Information, Advice & Guidance, so I was somewhat dreading undertaking my NVQ Level 4. Despite the slight nerves in starting my NVQ L4 Diploma in Advice and Guidance, Jo and Richard made the initial meeting very relaxed and welcoming whilst making a professional approach to what I will be doing. The process of the NVQ was spelt out to me so I knew what I would be doing and when. Even when my work case-load increased which had a knock on effect to me doing my NVQ, at no point was I made to feel under any added pressure to get it done. They were both very supportive and understanding of the situation.

Jo and Richard's obvious chemistry comes across very well which in turn made me feel relaxed and not afraid to ask any questions when needed. If I did have a problem or question they were easily contactable by phone and email despite juggling several candidates at one time. The feedback I received from written pieces of work and observations was clear, concise and always helpful. “Every aspect of Bay Training’s delivery of the NVQ was professional and excellent. The team was easily contactable by email or phone, and queries answered quickly. Work was returned promptly with positive feedback and encouragement. This was my first NVQ, and I was a bit apprehensive about building the portfolio and gathering all the evidence. My assessor, Marian, was so patient, and calmly steered me through to completion in the agreed time.

The taught sessions were a dynamic mix of theory and best practice, with opportunities to develop IAG skills through group activities and sharing knowledge and experience with other students. Observations and meetings with the assessor were effectively organised in advance, so could be planned smoothly into a busy work schedule. Observation feedback always allowed time for discussion and constructive reflection, followed by a comprehensive write-up of the evidence.

The most significant aspect of the training for me was understanding the importance of “getting IAG right” - ensuring equal access to services, respecting client confidentiality and delivering in a safe environment where trust can grow, and clients feel empowered to explore new avenues of learning, training and work. It has provided a bench mark for my own delivery, and given me confidence that the service is appropriate.
